BBL/IPL Pre & Post Instructions

Procedure Description

BroadBand Light HERO™ (High Energy Rapid Output) is an advanced form of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology. This device delivers carefully controlled light energy into the skin, where it is absorbed by pigments, blood vessels, and water. The heat produced from this energy helps to break down unwanted discoloration, minimize vascular lesions, and stimulate collagen production. This process can lead to clearer, brighter, and younger-looking skin. While many patients notice improvement after a single treatment, BBL HERO is most effective when performed as part of a series of treatments.

Anticipated Benefits

BBL HERO may improve the appearance of sun damage, freckles, age spots, redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea. It may also enhance overall tone and brightness of the skin and, over time, promote firmer texture through new collagen production. These benefits are gradual and cumulative, meaning that results typically build over several sessions and may continue to improve for months after treatment.

It is important to understand that every patient responds differently, and outcomes vary based on skin type, the condition being treated, and compliance with aftercare. No specific results can be guaranteed. Some patients may require additional sessions beyond what was originally recommended, and long-term maintenance treatments are often necessary to preserve results.

Risks and Side Effects

As with all medical aesthetic treatments, there are risks associated with BBL HERO.

Most patients will experience temporary redness, swelling, or warmth in the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn, which usually resolves within a few hours to a few days. Pigmented lesions often darken immediately and then gradually flake off within one to two weeks, which is a normal part of the healing process.

Less commonly, patients may experience blistering, crusting, or scabbing, as well as temporary pigmentation changes such as darkening (hyperpigmentation) or lightening (hypopigmentation) of the skin. Acne breakouts, folliculitis, or persistent redness may also occur.

Though rare, serious complications such as infection, scarring, or permanent textural changes are possible. Strict use of protective goggles is mandatory during treatment, as failure to do so could result in serious eye injury.

Contraindications

BBL HERO may not be appropriate for all patients Please read below a list of contraindications:

  • This treatment should not be performed on individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Those who have had recent sunburn, tanning bed use, or application of self-tanners within the past four weeks.
  • It is also contraindicated for patients who are currently taking isotretinoin (Accutane), or who have taken it within the past 6–12 months, as well as for those using medications or supplements that cause photosensitivity.
  • Active infections, cold sores, or open wounds in the treatment area are reasons to postpone. Individuals with a history of skin cancer, keloid formation, or poor wound healing may not be good candidates

It is the responsibility of the patient to fully disclose all relevant medical history and medications to their provider prior to treatment.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

To achieve safe and effective results, patients must strictly follow preparation guidelines:

  • Avoiding sun exposure, tanning, and spray tanning for at least four weeks prior to treatment.
  • Skincare products that contain retinoids, hydroquinone, acids, or other exfoliating agents should be discontinued several days in advance unless otherwise directed.
  • Waxing, chemical peels, or other resurfacing procedures should be avoided for at least two weeks prior.
  • On the day of treatment, the skin must be clean and free of makeup, lotions, or sunscreen.

Any changes in health, medications, or skin condition should be reported to the provider before proceeding.

Post-Treatment Expectations and Care

After treatment, the skin may feel warm, tender, or appear red for several hours to days. Pigmented spots will darken and may look like coffee grounds before flaking off naturally. This is an expected and temporary phase of healing.

To minimize risks and maximize results, patients must avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, hot tubs, and saunas for at least two weeks following treatment. Broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher should be applied daily and reapplied as directed. Only gentle cleansers and moisturizers should be used until the skin has fully recovered, and exfoliants, retinoids, or scrubs should be avoided unless cleared by the provider. The treated area should never be picked, scratched, or rubbed, as this can lead to infection or scarring. Makeup can generally be worn after 24 hours if the skin is intact.
